1228 CO2E F F O R T S R E D U C EGLASEL’s efforts to reduce carbon-dioxide emissionsUsing plant- derivedp o l yethy l ene ( bio - PE )As environmental and energy-related issues such as global warming andthe exhaustion of oil reserves come into close-up,the focus is now on carbon-neutralplant-based plastics (biomass), which pose less of an environmental burden,as substitutes for conventional petroleum-based plastics.GLASEL works with many types of eco-friendly plastics. In particular, we are interested in bio-PE and encouraging its use because it can be used like conventional PE.*C a r b o n - n e u t r a lPlastics made from plant material are environmentally friendlybecause they do not theoretically result in net CO2 emissionseven if they are incinerated on disposal, as the plants fromwhich they are made absorb CO2 as they grow.Bi o - P EBio-polyethylene (bio-PE) is manufactured using ethylene derived from bioethanol, which is made from plant materialas its raw ingredient.Bio-PE featured in this catalog is made from bioethanol. This bioethanol is produced in Brazil by fermenting molasses, which is the residue from refining, in most cases, sugarcane juice. Being produced from molasses, it does not affect orcompete with food (sugar) production. Moreover, ethylene production is followed by the same process as for petroleum-derived PE.Consequently, it can be easily molded by conventional polyethylene molding machines and molds.?*1Sugarcane J u i c eBagasse (crushed sugarcane refuse) Used as f uel for e thanol p roductionBlackstrapS u g a rE t h a n o l Ethylene PolyethyleneN a p h t h a Ethylene PolyethylenePetroleum-derived PEPlant-derived PEBio - PEBio - PEFossil - PET O E M I S S I O N S
